The 100 yen shop has become an unlikely tourist destination as well as something of a mainstay for ordinary life in Tokyo when price is the primary concern. There are, of course, limits to what can feasibly be obtained for 100 yen, and there are times when you don't want the ordinary but the altogether extraordinary. For one day only, Nihombashi Mitsukoshi has turned the 100 yen shop on its head with a limited premium store where everything is priced at 1,000,000 yen, curating a diverse range of products that you wouldn't normally be able to find, even in Mitsukoshi, as well as experiences that money simply can't buy ... that is, until now.
Each exhibit-turned-product reflects an important part of the Nihombashi Mitsukoshi experience. There's the literal: a solid 24k gold replica of the lion statues that stand proudly at the iconic entrance to the store. There's chances to enjoy the Japan beyond Nihombashi with no expense spared trips on Mitsukoshi's own premium tour busses that let you take the whole family, as well as the luxury in store all the way to idyllic Karuizawa. And there's the ideological, where, building on Japan's remarkable success in the recent Rugby World Cup, we have put together a set of everything someone would need to start their own club.
This is not just a chance to buy, but also an opportunity to experience the kind of event that only happens--and only can happen--at Nihombashi Mitsukoshi. Our history is replete with events that find a different way to celebrate the culture that surrounds us, and the people we share it with. So whether the peak of current pop culture, such as a chance to be featured as a character in the Demon's Gate video game, a 100year-old Japanese bonsai tree rooted in Japanese history, or even rare work from abroad such as that by Germany's master teddy bear artist Karin De Lorenzo, it all comes together to form our world--one we want to share with you.
