Iki is one of many Japanese aesthetics that simply eludes easy translation, at one sitting comfortably with nonchalant French chic, but also with the unwavering directness of the British gentleman. Perhaps then it is best to think of it as a concept all its own, born as it was amongst the unique cultural climate of the rising urbane class of old Edo, now Tokyo, which Nihombashi Mitsukoshi itself grew out of. Simply put, iki is style, not flaunted or as a means of simple self-satisfaction, but rather the assured confidence in being able to communicate your refined taste with others. SEKItoWA embraces this aesthetic in a line that captures restrained designs with profound depth, each item carrying a story of considered craft and attention to detail that both the wearer and their peers will delight in.
Taking the lead in the line-up is Japanese indigo-dyed sukumo leather items using Awa-ai dye from grower and producer Yoshiharu Toyama of Tokushima prefecture, himself recognized in his work as a protected cultural property in his own right producing as he does the sumptuous dye in one of five remaining production houses. The leather undergoes a gradual natural dyeing process with further layers of complexity added by expert craftsmen Naoyuki Asai, second generation dyer of the Kyoto-based Asai Batik atelier who expands on the possibilities in indigo dyeing with tie-dyeing and wax-resistant finishes that are designed to bring out the character of the leather in time, reflecting in the process the life of the wearer.
Originally inspired by the "seven implements of the samurai" referring to the essential tools a warrior would have needed in Edo Japan, the iki line considers what forms the armaments of the modern man, and accordingly we find shoes for work and play, business card cases to last a career, along with lacquerware to celebrate one's successes.
