064_01.jpgWith Japanese washoku cuisine enshrined by UNESCO as a protected cultural property, the emphasis on enjoying it in its full cultural context is stronger than ever, and with good reason, as until you have eaten it in the right setting, you haven't really eaten it at all. While guests to Nihombashi Mitsukoshi's thoroughly well-stocked food hall on the basement floor of the Main Building are greeted with the best of Japanese ingredients and meals, putting it together yourself in the comfort of your own home can be a daunting experience even to the initiated. As a cultural resort Nihombashi Mitsukoshi strives to be a place which strips away all barriers to enjoying Japanese culture, and accordingly we have developed the Jiyuan space as an oasis of calm in the bustle of the city, where you can do so much more than just eat Japanese washoku.

064_02.jpgBased on the idea of the five senses that go into the creation and enjoyment of Japanese food, Jiyuan first creates a seasonal space where, unlike the rest of the food hall, you can eat while you shop. Customers are invited to indulge their visual senses on the art and displays that rotate with the seasons, as well as their sense of smell, with specially selected seasonal scents diffused into the air to complement the cuisine.

With a constantly updating seasonal menu of both food, cocktails and sweets Jiyuan is the perfect place to dip your spoon into contemporary washoku, but enjoyed in the time-honored fashion, and with our attentive staff on hand to guide you and regular seminars for those wanting to learn more, before too long you will be ready to dig into the food hall beyond.
