138_01.jpgFor a tranquil spot to enjoy traditional Japanese refreshments in the heart of Nihombashi, look no further than Zen Cha'fe. This authentic tea house with a contemporary twist is only a few minutes' walk from Nihombashi Mitsukoshi, making it a perfect place to visit during or as part of your time with us.

138_02.jpgEstablished in 2001, Zen Cha'fe - as the name suggests - is designed to provide complete zen togetherness for body and mind through omotenashi, the hospitality for which Japan is so famous. Its other aim is to make Japanese tea more accessible by providing an informal atmosphere in which to appreciate it. From its humble beginnings, this beautiful, modern teahouse was born, serving the finest green tea and confectionary. Later, as enthusiastic patrons expressed interest in other offerings, specialty drinks, light meals, desserts and coffee were added to the menu. However, even after fifteen years, ryokucha green tea from Kyoto remains at the heart of Zen Cha'fe. Each of the vast range of Japanese tea drinks use this family of green tea, 138_03.jpgfrom sencha, the most commonly consumed tea, to maccha, the tea reserved for use in tea ceremonies.

As tea lovers themselves, the staff at Zen Cha'fe know what makes a good cup of tea into a great one. Powder rather than leaves is used for each tea drink to ensure all the flavour and goodness of the plant goes into every cup. To heat the water, a large pot made of iron is used as its minerals naturally enhance the tea's flavour. Particularly popular is the creamy, bitter-sweet Maccha Latte and a Zen Cha'fe original drink, Oshiruko Latte. As oshiruko, a red bean porridge, is normally consumed at home, the latter is a favourite among those seeking a fresh take on this traditional homemade dessert.

Needless to say Zen Cha'fe has no intention of resting on its laurels, with plans in the works to expand their range of desserts to feature a Maccha Pudding and Maccha Sandwich. Still, one aspect of Zen Cha'fe that will stay the same is the delightful ambience. With three floors, each with a distinctive style, there is a taste for everyone. For an authentic Japanese experience, spread out on the tatami matting on the second floor, if a cosy space is more to your liking, continue to the third floor where you can relax on comfortable sofas. Whatever option you choose, feel free to take your time in this oasis of calm in the bustle of the city.
